8. When All Seems Lost...

The last thing I ever expected? For Carter Ford to show up at my freaking house.

I stared dumbly at him on my front porch steps. He’d even changed. He was wearing a light blue shirt and black jeans. Guess blue really was his favorite color. He looked good, but I banned myself from thinking about that. Wait, it wasn’t just a blue shirt. It was for a soccer team and the words ‘Sporting KC’ were across his chest.

I wanted to slam the door in his face or say something cold and cutting but instead I asked, “Is blue your favorite color because of that soccer team? Or is the soccer team your favorite because they wear blue?”

He frowned and glanced down at his shirt. “I don’t factor outfits into it when picking my favorite players and teams.”

“Oh. Right.” Obviously. Whatever. He was the one who showed up here out of nowhere, so I just endured the awkwardness in stony silence.

“Or I don’t anymore,” he said with a small, hesitant smile. “But I’ve liked Sporting since I was a kid. That totally might be why I was interested in them in the first place.” He smiled all hopefully at me, and I couldn’t handle it.

I feigned looking around and said, “If you want me to invite you in quick before anyone sees, you’re out of luck.”

“No, that’s not what I’m doing.”

“Really? It sure seems like you only want to be my friend when no one else will find out.”

“No, it seems like you’re avoiding me at work. I want a chance to explain.”

I wasn’t sure I needed to be as dramatic as shutting the door in his face, but I also didn’t know if I’d ever have another chance to slam the door in someone’s face, and I wanted to know if it was as satisfying as I thought it would be.

Before I could go for it, I heard a voice behind me. “Cornelius, is that a friend?” And then before I could say no and slam the door, my mom introduced herself and Carter smiled and acted all charming and got invited to dinner.

Aside from Libby, who didn’t even count as a friend because we were stuck together in the way only family can be, I had a little group of friends at school. But they were outcasts and weirdos like me. My parents were both so thrilled to see me with another person—a guy my own age who seemed so athletic and put together—I thought they’d propose to Carter on my behalf. Well, bro propose. Or something.

I couldn’t do anything but let Carter keep charming them. They were just so happy that I had a normal, well-adjusted friend my own age. My other friends maybe spent the majority of their time in their dark bedrooms playing role playing games, so they were pale as vampires and as socially awkward as people who spent a majority of their time inside a coffin.

We were all seated around the dinner table.
